CONSTRUCTION GUIDE / ACACIA & TEAK SOURCING

End grain vs edge grain cutting boards.

For wholesale buyers, end grain vs edge grain is a construction decision. Define which wood surface faces up, then compare the same material, finished dimensions, routed details and packaging before choosing a board program.

Three grain formats, three different descriptions

A face-grain board presents the broad face of the timber at the top. It may be made from one piece or from solid strips joined edge to edge. An edge-grain board presents the narrower edge surfaces of lengthwise strips. An end-grain board presents the fibre ends in an assembled block layout.

Edge-glued describes how pieces are joined, while edge grain describes their orientation. An edge-glued panel can still present face grain. Record both assembly and grain orientation in the specification so the supplier quotes the construction you intended.

Pattern names such as chevron or herringbone describe the appearance. They do not replace the grain-orientation specification.

Choose the format around the intended use

End-grain construction puts the wood fibres in a different direction at the working surface from a long-grain board. This changes the way the surface meets a knife and gives the board its characteristic block appearance. End-grain products are often developed as substantial butcher-block-style items.

Face-grain and edge-grain constructions can suit prep, cutting and serving ranges depending on the wood, size and finish. State the intended use, handling requirements and target product position. Durability and surface condition also depend on material selection, bonding, finishing and care.

Compare equal dimensions before comparing prices

End-grain production requires additional cutting, block assembly, gluing and surfacing compared with a simpler long-grain panel. Block dimensions, pattern alignment and the finished thickness affect material yield and labour.

A thick end-grain butcher block and a thin serving board are different products even when their length and width match. Use our wholesale pricing guide to compare wood, dimensions, construction, machining and packing on the same basis.

Make the sample describe the construction

Approve the top surface and board edges, not only an overhead product image. A drawing and close views help show strip or block orientation, joints, thickness and routed details. Agree natural colour variation and inspection criteria before bulk production.

All wooden-board formats need care appropriate to their finish and use. Include washing, drying and re-oiling information where applicable. An end-grain construction is not a substitute for clear care instructions.

Specify acacia or teak after choosing the format

ATB reviews acacia and teak in different constructions according to material availability and the approved design. The acacia end-grain board range and solid teak paddle program provide different catalogue starting points.

Send the wood, construction, dimensions, quantity, groove or handle drawing, finish, logo and packaging. Where the format is undecided, ask for clearly separated alternatives rather than a single quote covering several unspecified constructions.

BUYER QUESTIONS

Before you request a quotation.

Does edge-glued mean edge grain?

No. Edge-glued describes the joining method. Edge grain means the narrow edge surfaces of the strips face up. A joined solid panel can present face grain instead.

Is chevron a grain type?

Chevron is a pattern description. Specify the pattern separately from face-grain, edge-grain or end-grain construction.

Does end grain always mean a heavier board?

Weight depends on wood density, finished dimensions and features. End-grain products are often offered in thicker formats, but compare the actual product weight rather than assuming it from the name.
